If you are an ignition interlock device user, you should be very careful to avoid false positive interlock readings. These devices use fuel cells which show blood alcohol readings for common products such as hand sanitizer, sugarless gum, baked goods, flavored coffee, toothpaste, mouthwash, and cough drops. Interlock devices are nowhere near as accurate or reliable as a standard
breathalyzer. Interlock users should be mindful of this. IIDs are lockout devices, they are not scientific test instruments. In Massachusetts, interlock readings which show alcohol can result in 10 year or lifetime license suspensions.
